Job Opening: District Manager

Position Summary

The District Manager is hired by and acts under the direction of the Board. As the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the District, the District Manager is responsible for all aspects of the efficient and cost-effective operation and administration of the District, including all District employees, volunteers, independent contractors, and consultants. The District Manager shall have the power and authority to organize, manage and control all activities necessary or appropriate for the efficient operation and administration of the District, in accordance with the policies and procedures established by the Board from time to time, in its sole discretion. The District Manager advises the Board on all matters relating to the planning, development, administration and operation of the District’s departments. The District Manager performs a variety of complex executive work in planning, directing, and coordinating the management of the District, including planning and implementing programming and recreational amenities, parks, and facility operations, parks administration, public relations, marketing and special events. The District Manager works closely with the Board to develop and implement capital improvements, programming goals, and annual budgets.

Job Requirements

The ideal candidate will have a Bachelor’s Degree in Public Administration, Recreation or related field. A Master’s Degree is highly preferred. A minimum of five (5) years progressively responsible experience in parks, recreation, community services, finance and supervision and at least two (2) years of experience in a senior level management position. Experience at a public park and recreation agency is preferred. High level of financial knowledge and expertise is required, particularly in the development and on-going monitoring of all aspects of the District budget. The ability to make high level decisions regarding complex issues and special projects. Must have the ability to rely on experience and judgment when a with a wide degree of creativity and latitude to accomplish responsibilities. The ability to establish and maintain professional working relationships with other District personnel, the Board of directors, representatives of other governmental agencies and the public is a requirement. A combination of education and experience may be considered.

Must possess a valid California Driver License or have the ability to obtain upon hire and maintain an acceptable driving record. The ability to successfully complete a background check including and not limited to criminal history search and motor vehicle record check is required.


Hiring Range: $73,000 - $98,000 Annually DOE.
District Vehicle, Cell Phone Allowance. Excellent benefits package including medical, dental, vision, life and AD&D, long-term disability, CalPERS retirement plan to which the District contributes, 457 Deferred Compensation plan. Also included are professional development and recreational benefits.
