Position Summary 

This job description is established by the Tehachapi Valley Recreation & Park District to outline the basic requirements, duties and general responsibilities of the position. This position is "at will", which means the District may terminate the employment relationship at any time and for any or no reason, subject only to the requirements of Federal and State law. Similarly, the employee may terminate the employment relationship without notice at any time for any or no reason.

Under the direction of the District Manager, the Sports Supervisor is responsible for the development, organization, and supervision of all youth and adult sports leagues, clinics, camps, and athletic programs offered by the Tehachapi Valley Recreation & Park District. The position oversees daily operations including scheduling, equipment management, communication with coaches and participants, and supervision of part-time staff and volunteers. The Sports Supervisor plays a vital role in fostering a safe, inclusive, and active environment for community members through quality sports programming. This position requires working evenings, weekends, and holidays as event schedules demand and may require working outdoors in various weather conditions.

Essential Responsibilities 

Program Planning & Operations

  • Plan, coordinate, and implement a wide range of youth and adult athletic programs including leagues, clinics, tournaments, and open gyms.
  • Supervise day-to-day operations of sports programs including site visits, game-day coordination, and equipment setup and breakdown.
  • Develop program schedules, team rosters, game rules, and field/court assignments.
  • Coordinate and communicate with other TVRPD departments for use of facilities and parks.
  • Serve as liaison between participants, parents, coaches, officials, and TVRPD administration.
  • Monitor program participation, respond to inquiries and concerns, and resolve conflicts on-site.
  • Maintain inventory of athletic supplies and equipment.
  • Assist in the promotion of sports programs via flyers, digital marketing, and community outreach.
  • Ensure all programs align with District goals for safety, inclusion, and community impact

Staff & Volunteer Management

  • Recruit, train, and supervise part-time sports staff, referees/officials, and volunteer coaches.
  • Provide orientation, instruction, and performance feedback to ensure high-quality programming.
  • Enforce district policies, safety protocols, and conduct expectations at all sporting activities.

Promotion & Outreach

  • Promote events through TVRPD’s website, social media platforms, print materials, and other relevant avenues.
  • Develop and distribute event marketing collateral, including seasonal flyers, rack cards, and digital campaigns.
  • Cultivate relationships with local businesses, organizations, and media outlets for sponsorships and publicity.

Administration & Budget

  • Track attendance, program feedback, incident reports, and supply usage.
  • Responsible for preparing, developing, and monitoring all program budget, ensuring efficient use of funds and resources.
  • Collaborate with District Manager to evaluate programs and implement improvements.

Safety

  • Report incidents and unsafe conditions promptly.
  • Maintain current certifications in First Aid/CPR and participate in required safety training.

Other

  • Regularly assists and collaborates other departments as needed
  • Performs special projects and other work as assigned. 
Qualifications 

Education, Training, & Experience

  • Possess a Bachelor’s degree in Recreation, Sports Management, Kinesiology, or related field preferred.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience organizing or supervising recreational sports leagues or athletic programs.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills with attention to detail.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and social media platforms.
  • Valid California Driver’s License with acceptable driving record.
  • American Red Cross First Aid/CPR/AED certification or must obtain within 3 months of hire.
  • Ability to work flexible hours including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and perform physical program setup as needed.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience working in a municipal or public recreation environment.
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish.
  • Experience officiating or coaching youth or adult sports.
  • Familiarity with recreation registration software and scheduling platforms.

Licenses and Certificates

  • American Red Cross First Aid/CPR/AED certified or must obtain within 3 months
  • American Red Cross Lifeguard certified or must obtain within 3 months
  • Valid California driver’s license; driving record must comply with District safety standards
  • DOJ Fingerprint Rolling certified or must obtain within 3 months
Physical Demands & Working Conditions 
  • Ability to stand, walk, run, lift, bend, and carry equipment up to 50 pounds.
  • Work in outdoor conditions including extreme heat, wind, cold, and rain.
  • Frequent exposure to noise and active sports environments.
  • May be required to work varied shifts, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • Use of personal protective equipment as required.
  • Possibility of exposure to communicable diseases.
Compensation 
  • Hourly, Non-Exempt. Pay DOE.
